Summary
Shakeups and changes to West Virginia University’s newly formed athletic committee resulted in Edwin Regur Sweetland assuming the head football coaching role in 1913. Sweetland was a standout tackle on Glen “Pop” Warner’s 1898 Cornell team but his one year at WVU led to a disappointing 3-4-2 record and an even more disappointing 21-0 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan. The Wesleyan defeat stirred alums to call for West Virginia to hire a nationally known football coach.
