Pitt graduate and Jock Sutherland protégé Bill Kern led Mountaineer football through the war years while playing some of the most difficult schedules in school history. Included among his 24 victories were outstanding upset victories over Kansas, Kentucky, Penn State, Syracuse and Pitt. His WVU tenure was interrupted for three years while he served in the Navy.
