Wing T practitioner Dud DeGroot was hired from the professional ranks to lead the Mountaineer grid program in 1948. His first team comprised of Bill Kern players won nine games and defeated Texas Western, now Texas El Paso, in the 1949 Sun Bowl. His second team in 1949 was far less successful, bringing his two-year mark to 13-9-1.
